Posted by West Lake Dentistry Jun 28, 2022

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder that causes you to stop breathing while you sleep. This can occur more than 20 times per hour and, as a result, can cause you to wake up feeling exhausted. Sleep apnea is most common in overweight men over the age of 40, but it can occur in anyone.

A sleep apnea dental device, such as VIVA, can help prevent sleep apnea by keeping the airway open.

What is VIVA?

VIVA is a new, FDA-approved oral device that treats obstructive sleep apnea. It works by continuously adjusting the position of the mouth during sleep to keep the airway open. The device is customized and worn similarly to a mouth guard.

Who is a good candidate for VIVA?

VIVA is for sleep apnea patients who cannot tolerate a CPAP device. The mandibular advancement device is also ideal for patients who might stop complying with their CPAP device, which is the case for many patients.

VIVA is a dental device that is custom-made for each patient. The oral appliance is worn during sleep and works by moving the jaw forward. This opens the airway and reduces the severity of sleep apnea symptoms.

Patients who are good candidates for VIVA are adults who:

- Cannot tolerate CPAP therapy

- Would prefer a more comfortable device

- Are concerned about costs

However, not all patients can be treated with VIVA. In order to be a candidate, patients must:

What happens after VIVA?

After your VIVA procedure, you’ll need to have regular cleanings and check-ups as you normally would. The dentist may also recommend wearing an oral appliance at night to help keep your airways open.
